Types of Sheet Materials: Plywood, OSB & MDF

Not all sheet goods are created equal. Plywood, OSB, and MDF may seem similar at first glance, but put them in the wrong application, and you'll know about it quickly. This guide breaks down what sets each one apart so you can shop with confidence and build with the right material. What Are These Sheets, Anyway?
Before getting into which one to use, it helps to understand what you're actually working with.
Plywood is made of thin layers of wood veneer glued together, with each layer's grain running perpendicular to the one below it. That cross-grain construction is what gives plywood its strength and stability.
OSB (Oriented Strand Board) is made by compressing and binding wood strands with resin under high heat and pressure. The strands are oriented in specific directions to give the panel structural consistency, though you can still see the individual chips and strands on the surface.
MDF (Medium-Density Fibreboard) is made from fine wood fibres and resin pressed into a smooth, dense sheet. It has no grain pattern, no knots, and no voids; just a uniform surface from edge to edge.
Three very different products. Three very different jobs.
Plywood: The Versatile Workhorse
Plywood is the most broadly useful of the three. It's strong, relatively lightweight for its thickness, and holds fasteners well. It's also available in a wide range of grades, from rough construction sheathing with pressure-treated options to smooth, sanded cabinet-grade sheets made from higher-end species, making it adaptable to a wide variety of projects.
Plywood is generally the most expensive of the three, and lower-grade sheets can have internal voids, gaps in the core layers that only reveal themselves when you cut or drill through the sheet.
Best uses: Subfloors, roof and wall sheathing, cabinetry, shelving, exterior applications, or structural projects.
OSB: The Budget-Friendly Structural Panel
OSB is the go-to structural sheathing in residential construction, and for good reason. It's consistent, it has no voids, and it costs less than plywood of comparable thickness. For large sheathing applications where you're covering a lot of area, the savings add up.
The downside of OSB is that it struggles with moisture. It soaks up water and swells noticeably, especially at the edges, and it doesn't recover the way plywood can in similar conditions. That means keeping it dry in storage and getting it covered quickly. OSB is also heavier than plywood and has a rougher surface, so it's not a great candidate for applications where the sheet will be visible or finished.
Best uses: Roof and wall sheathing, subfloors (when kept dry), or structural panels where cost is a priority.
MDF: The Smooth Operator
MDF is in a category of its own when it comes to surface quality. It's flat, it's consistent, and it paints beautifully because there's no grain telegraphing through the finish. For painted interior millwork and cabinet doors, it's hard to beat. It also machines extremely well. Routers, jigsaws, and CNC cutters produce clean, crisp edges in MDF that you'd struggle to replicate in plywood or OSB; this is why MDF is a popular substrate for interior moulding products. If you're making a detailed built-in or painted trim piece, MDF will reward the effort.
The downsides are significant, though. MDF is dense and heavy, which makes larger sheets genuinely awkward to handle with one person. It has almost no moisture tolerance (unless using exterior grades); even humidity can cause it to swell over time. Therefore, it is not a good candidate for bathrooms, laundry rooms, or any area exposed to water. Its edges don't hold fasteners very well, so fastening near the perimeter of a sheet requires careful predrilling. However, if it does get damaged, it can't be sanded back to bare wood and refinished the way real wood can.
Best uses: Cabinets and doors, painted trim and mouldings, built-ins, interior furniture, router or CNC work, or any application where a smooth painted surface is the goal.
Side-by-Side: Choosing the Right Sheet
If you are still deciding, here are a few simple ways to think through it:
- Structural framing, sheathing, or subfloor on a budget = OSB
- Structural work where moisture is a factor = Plywood (or pressure-treated version)
- A project that needs a beautiful, natural finish = Finish Plywood
- Painted interior millwork, interior doors, or detail work = MDF
- Wet areas, like a bathroom, laundry, or exterior space = Exterior-grade plywood
- Holding screws along the face of the sheet = Plywood or OSB
A Few Things to Keep in Mind at the Lumber Yard
Sheet goods come in grades and ratings that matter more than most people realize. Sheathing-grade panels are made for structural applications where they'll be covered. Sanded or cabinet-grade sheets cost more but are worth it when the surface will be seen or finished.
Exposure ratings tell you how much moisture a panel can handle. For plywood, "Exterior" and "Pressure Treated" ratings are for wet and outdoor applications. "Exposure 1" handles temporary moisture during construction but isn't meant for long-term exposure. OSB and MDF have no meaningful moisture resistance unless specifically rated for it.
Thickness also matters; don't just grab the cheapest sheet in the size you need. Make sure the thickness is appropriate for the load, span, or application you have in mind. Most manufacturers and building codes specify minimum thicknesses for structural applications (e.g. 5/8” or 3/4” on floors), and it's worth taking a minute to confirm before you load up the truck.
The Right Sheet Makes All the Difference
Plywood, OSB, and MDF are all useful materials, but each one earns its place in a specific context. Match the sheet to the job, and the project will come together cleanly. Mix them up, and you'll be solving problems that didn't need to exist.
