How to Create a DIY Mosaic Tile Floor in 7 Easy Steps

Step 1 - Prepare the room and the surface

Begin by removing the old tiles in the room, along with any doors and baseboards that might get in your way. Be sure to inspect the subfloor to ensure that no water damage or rot has occurred.

Step 2 - Add an uncoupling membrane

After measuring the room's length and width, roll out the uncoupling membrane and mark the measurements with a permanent marker. Cut out the membrane with a utility knife and lay it down in the room to check its size.

To secure the membrane to the floor, mix the mortar according to the package instructions and spread it on the entire floor before adding the membrane. Press down the membrane with a wood block or a grout float to ensure that it is secured to the floor.

Step 3 - Test the layout of the design

Before committing to your final design, lay down the tiles without any mortar to check the placement and ensure that you love the design. Now is your time to experiment and check to see if anything needs to be changed or cut.

When using broken tiles for the mosaic, be sure to use safety gloves as the ceramic can be sharp to the touch.

Step 4 - Spread the mortar
